News & Events

Ladakh

Ladakh is a remote Himalayan region in the north of India, at an average altitude of 11, 000 ft, cut off from the rest of the world (except by air) for 5-6 months of the year. In the past farmers grew different kinds of crops and vegetables, knew how to survive in minus 300 C without a heating system, and led a content and self-sufficient life. Nowadays outside pressure, both from India and the West lure many to the money economy. It is important for Ladakhis to study as much as possible in Ladakh in order to fully understand the region, culture and its rich heritage, but they have to travel abroad for post A level studies. Lately, a government degree college has started, which is improving each day but it will be sometime before many choose stay in Leh – Ladakh for post A level studies.

The Sacred New Era (SNE) School

The Sacred New Era (SNE) School is an attempt to address the issue of living in the modern world without abandoning traditional culture. It uses a Montessori approach to encourage children from an early age to think for themselves and become aware. This school is different from general Ladakhi Schools and is growing because parents are realising its beneficial qualities. It offers a unique education and is an example of diverse communities within Ladakh working together.

Pupils at SNE School represent different faiths and ethnic groups and come from villages around Leh, and even further away. Classes begin from pre-nursery (stage 1st), Nursery (stage 2nd), Kindergarten (stage 3rd) and up to grade 07, with plan to take up to grade 12 in future. For the first two years the complete Montessori Method is followed, and then books are introduced to complement this. Parents have been informed and involved in the development of the school, which is unusual in Ladakh. We envisage several challenges ahead and it is still a long way to go for us to achieve our long term strategy and indeed the kind of education that we want at the SNE school, but with the support of parents, staff, people of Ladakh in general, dedication of the founder, and with the help and support of ardent supporters we will be able to overcome all the challenges as we have done so far.
