Ladakh
Ladakh is a remote Himalayan region in the north of India, at an average altitude of 11, 000 ft,
cut off from the rest of the world (except by air) for 5-6 months of the year. In the past farmers
grew different kinds of crops and vegetables, knew how to survive in minus 300 C without a
heating system, and led a content and self-sufficient life. Nowadays outside pressure, both from
India and the West lure many to the money economy. It is important for Ladakhis to study as
much as possible in Ladakh in order to fully understand the region, culture and its rich heritage,
but they have to travel abroad for post A level studies. Lately, a government degree college has
started, which is improving each day but it will be sometime before many choose stay in Leh –
Ladakh for post A level studies.
